Day 2 - Cancun's Zona Hotelera and Isla Mujeres

DAY 1 * HOME * DAY 3
Woke up and the clothes I washed last night are soaked. Lesson #1 is that clothes dry better outside than inside. A big surprise is the bus station. It is huge. In 1985 Cancun was a small city with a dinky bus station. How things change!!!

The rainforest cafe - a bad investment for me but works well in Cancun Decide to walk to the Zona Hotelera because I've read it is just like the USA. Cuidad Cancun is bad enough with WallMart and lots of USA merchants. Walk 10 miles down the bike path. A LOT of construction and huge hotels. Purchase some water and they had trouble finding pesos to give me as change because they deal with dollars here. Walk by the Rainforest Cafe and it feels right in place! Return to Hotel Room at noon and the clothes (hanging up outside) are dry. A couple of the NUMOUROUS hotels in the hotel zone

Circle Island on scooter. Others circle on gulf carts. Men do work in background. Most work in Mexico is manual labor. Bus to Puerto Juarez costs ~40 cents and boat to Isla Mujeres not much more. Find the Poc-Na Hostel easily and drop off pack. It has changed also. No longer the juke box. Less of a party place but still lots of interesting people staying there. Rent a scooter to circle the island on. The turtle farm where eggs are protected and turtles kept until they are old enough to fend for themselves Stopped at La Torugranja, the turtle farm. Turtles are endangered; primarily because humans enjoy eating their eggs and meat. Turtles are brought to the breeding farm. They lay their eggs on the beach and the eggs are relocated to a fenced in area safe from natural predators. The new-born turtles are then kept at the farm until they are old enough to fend for themselves. The guide claimed that tens of thousands of turtles are released each year.
Playa Garrafon amusement park. Snorkling, swimming, a big rope you can glide along, etc. The Mayan Ruins and Playa Garrafon were pretty to look at from a distance but charging too much to see close up so I passed. Ruins in the background, modern art in foreground
Relaxing on the North Beach North Beach was as beautiful and relaxing as always. There is also a nice pathway along the East side of the town which I enjoyed walking on. Had the first Negra Modelo of many back at the Hostel. Salsa Band entertains in the night Took a couple hour nap in a hammock in the hostel's back yard. A live Salsa Band that was fairly good was playing in the town square so I listened to most of their concert.
