Day 3 - Isla Cozumel

DAY 2 * HOME * DAY 4
Fellow snorklers from EuropeWoke up to catch the 6:00 ferry back to the mainland for $3.50. Then the 40 cent local bus to Cancun and the $2.50 Playa Express 2nd class bus to Playa del Carmen and finally the $7.50 boat to Isla Cozumel. I was on the island by 10:00. Quickly found a hotel, got into my swimming suit, and headed back to the ferry terminal where I asked a likely man about snorkeling. Turns out he owns a boat and his was the next in line to leave. He was too happy not to have to pay finder commission on me and told me about growing up in Cozumel as he led me to his boat. At 11:30 we were off!
Some of the fish I saw Me snorkling We stopped at three excellent reefs. We had an incredible guide who could dive very deep to show us objects and stay under water for a considerable time. The boat contained two Mexican crew, a couple from Sweden, a couple from Germany, a couple from Denmark, and me from USA. English seemed to be the language we most had in common so we used English among each other.
San Gervasio Maya ruinsWe finished Snorkeling at 3:00 so their was still time to rent a scooter to circle the island. I stopped at the minor ruins of San Gervasio (pictured). The eastern shore was wild with the sea waves splashing so hard against the seashore rocks that spray covered the roadway. It felt good on the scooter. Many beautiful beaches. Then 2 huge cruise ships and a modern mall just south of the main town (yuk). A great way to see the island. I was paying for the scooter by the hour and stayed longer than I should have at the ruins so didn't have time to take pictures of the beaches and still make it back in two hours.
How could their be so much laundry? Had a wonderful mole for dinner. Then back to the hotel room. The hotel had internet access so wrote a few letters home and then did the laundry. Still cannot figure out how there could be so much laundry in just three days. Doing that much laundry is hard work, especially cotton. I was beat. Resolved to get more light weight clothing before I travel again. And from this point on, I paid somebody to do the laundry :). The hotel did not have an outside area to dry the laundry so I opened all the windows and put the laundry right under the fan to dry. It seemed to work! The cotton was almost dry the next morning and the thinner stuff was very dry.
