This page illustrates a few specific figures: Layback and Layover.

Layback

Layover

In most dance figures, we try to remain on balance and to support our own weight. We do not ask our partners to hold us up. But in the layback, the woman (usually) does incline her body backwards, and she does rely on her man to support her. She can layback against his body. She can layback into one arm. Here is a double layback, each pulling against the other.

The styling in a layback can vary greatly.

In a layover, the woman inclines not backward but forward. She drapes her body against his and allows him to support her weight. Sometimes it has a "cuddle from behind" kind of look. A round dance in which the layover was used conspicuously was Shibata's Beyond, a phase V rumba. We did a cross-hand underarm turn to tandem and then a layover in which the man leaned forward a bit, and the woman leaned her whole body against the man's back and stretched up on her toes.

Again, the styling in different layovers can vary greatly.
