This page illustrates a few specific figures: Chair, Contra Check, Corte, Dip, and Lunge.

Contra Check

Right Lunge

The contra check is a phase V figure used in all the smooth rhythms. The man turns his body left face, flexes his knees, and steps forward on his left with strong contra-body action. Contra-body action occurs when one steps with one foot (in this case, the left) but leads with the opposite side of the torso (in this case, the right). As he steps forward, he turns his left toe out for greater stability. The heads are closed (right for the man and left for the woman).

During the step, the woman is always careful to delay the taking of weight. She lets the man determine how long the step will be. If she takes weight too soon, she may cut off the flow of his movement and get her toes stepped on.

The right lunge is a phase IV smooth figure in which the man steps side and forward with the trail foot. Again, heads are closed.

There are a great variety of lunging movements in which one takes one step and usually softens that knee. Here we have a lunge to the man's left. In tango, this might be called a corte; in waltz, it could be a dip.

Here, a couple lunges forward on lead feet in half open position. The man lunges forward, and the woman sits. A chair is a figure in which the man and woman lunge forward on their trail feet and soften into the supporting knees. The supporting thighs are supposed to suggest the seat of a straight-back chair. Here we have a chair with considerable back poise.

Fred Astaire — Making Love On the Dance Floor

"I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music."

- George Eliot
