Shadow, Skaters, Varsouvienne, Tandem
In shadow (left, above), the man is behind and to the woman's left. In this photo, they are exhibiting same footwork, but opposite footwork is common, too. In tandem (right, above), one (usually the man) is directly behind the other.
| These are various examples of Shadow Position. |
Obviously, much variability is allowed, in footwork, handwork, and body movement. |

Skaters
| In shadow position, when left-left hands are joined and outstretched, and right-right hands are joined at the woman's waist, the position is called Skaters. |
None of these photos conforms strictly to the definition of Skaters Position, but they give the idea. |

Lady's Shadow
| In Left Shadow, the man is still behind the woman, but she is to his left. |
Here, we have a sort of shadow position, but it is the woman who is behind and to the left of the man. |

Varsouvienne
| In Varsouvienne Position, the man again dances behind and to the left of the woman, but right-right and left-left hands are joined and held high. |

Tandem
| In Tandem Position, the man is directly behind the woman. Actually, I suppose it is rare that the rule is strictly followed. Here, we see varying degrees of offset and almost continuous variation from tandem, through shadow, and into both varsouvienne and skaters. |
Here, we almost have a Wrapped Position. She is crossing her right arm over left. Now, if he would just take her hands, her right in his left and her left in his right. |

Is this an extreme form of tandem or some kind of "layback" or even "lie down?" |

In the scorpion's mating dance, "the male initiates a series of grasping and kneading movements with his chelicerae (minor claws), then grasps the female's chela (major claw) with his own and performs the celebrate promenade a deux, a reciprocated and symmetrical 'dance,' pretty as anything you'll see at Arthur Murray's. He deposits the spermatophore, usually on a stick or twig, then bats or even stings her, disengages, and runs for his life."
