Mission Impossible
Tom Cruise does his rebel-against-the-authorities schtick yet again.
Features: Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Vanessa Redgrave
Director: Brian De Palma
Tom is a member of the Secretary-disavowed IMF and things take a
decided bad turn. Rest of the movie is Tom out to redeem himself, so it's yet another movie
with Cruise the Rebel (Days of Thunder, Top Gun) doing his rebelling schtick.
The flick is based on the series, yet it takes such an anti-MI stance that the movie left a very bad taste
in my mouth. Its zig-zaggy incoherent plot didn't help matters either.
Jon Voight is capable in his role. Emmanuelle Beart is the quite stunning eye candy.
Movie has the helicopter/train sequence which is quite amazing;
but not enough of a reason to make the trip to the theater unless you're
a hardcore Cruise fan.
MI is surprisingly directed by Brian De Palma. I say "surprisingly" because the flick
contains none of the De Palma flash that we've come to expect, such as the baby carriage sequence
from The Untouchables.
Movie's suitability for:
- Action Jackson: 50%
- Joe Fratboy (date movie): 60%
- Cinephile (pretentious movie lover): 10%
- F/X freaks: 50%
- Tom Cruise fans: 90%
